心に生をうつし筆に骨法#1を画は画法にして。
今門人哥麿か著す虫中の生を写すは是
心画なり。哥子幼昔物事に細成か。たゝ
戯れに秋津虫を繋きはた〳〵蟀蟋を
掌にのせ遊ひて。余念なし。即其生を
むさほらんことを恐れてあまたゝひいましめしに。
今の筆策誠に業の徳をかゝやかせしは#2。
現代語訳
心に生命を移し、筆に骨法を描くのが画法である。
今、門人の歌麿が著した虫の生態を写すのは、これこそ
心画である。歌麿は幼い頃から物事に細やかであった。ただ
戯れに蜻蛉を糸で繋いだり、こおろぎを
手のひらに乗せて遊んでいて、他のことは考えなかった。
その生命を損なうことを恐れて、何度も戒めたところ、
今の筆の技は誠に修業の徳を輝かせたのである。
英語訳
To transfer life into one's heart and paint bone structure with one's brush is the way of painting.
Now, my disciple Utamaro has written about copying the life of insects, which is truly
painting from the heart. Utamaro has been meticulous about things since he was young. He would simply
play by tying dragonflies with thread or placing crickets
on his palm for amusement, thinking of nothing else.
Fearing that he might harm their lives, I admonished him many times.
Now his brushwork has truly made the virtue of his training shine.
