玉虫のつやをうはひ古画を辱て。車に
向ふ蟷螂の鎌かりて蚯蚓の土を穿ち。その
さひはつをたゝさんと棒ふりのふりよき
図に。くらき物心蛍の光りに此道をてらし。蜘の
巣の糸口をとけと諸君の狂哥合にたより。
彫巧藤一宗か刀は。桜木にものして其起を

すたく虫の声きかんと例のたはれたる
友とちかたみにひきゐて両国の北

さためんとす故ありて酒と妓とを

玉虫の艶やかさを奪い、古画を凌駕して、車に
向かう蟷螂の鎌を借り、蚯蚓の土を掘る技を用いて、その
細やかさをただ讃えようと、棒振りが振るような
良い図に描いた。暗い物事も蛍の光でこの道を照らし、蜘蛛の
巣の糸口を解けと、諸君の狂歌合に頼って。
彫刻の名手藤一宗の刀は桜木に施されて、その始まりを
説明せよと請われるままに記す。

今日は何と八月十四日の夜、野辺で
鳴く虫の声を聞こうと、例のふざけた
友達と互いに誘い合って、両国の北、
吉原の東、鯉久庵の先のあたり、
隅田の堤に毛氈を敷いて、それぞれが
虫の音の高低や美しさを
決めようとした。事情があって酒と遊女を
控えたので、脇目も振らず虫の
宴とでも言うべきか。どこかの寺の
鐘の音が虫の音に混じって、ほのかに

Today being the night of August 14th, to listen
to the voices of insects crying in the fields,
I went with my usual frivolous
friends, encouraging each other, to the north of Ryōgoku,
east of Yoshiwara, near Koikyū-an,
where we spread felt mats on the Sumida embankment, and each of us
tried to judge the high and low tones
and beauty of the insects' songs. Due to circumstances, we abstained from sake and courtesans,
so without looking aside, this might be called an insect
banquet. The sound of a temple bell somewhere
