這（この）水滸伝（すゐこでん）也（や）。洪信（こうしん）が龍虎山（りやうこざん）の邪（じや）に乱（みだ）れて。宗公（さうこう）が
蓼兒洼（りやうじあ）の義（ぎ）に治（おさま）る。邪（じや）は 是（これ）蛇（じや）にして義（ぎ）は是（これ）蟻（ぎ）也（なり）。蛇（じや）の
百丈（ひやくぜう）にして莫大（ばくたい）なれども。六朔（りくさく）に看（み）る 背富士（うらふじ） の麦茎（むぎはら）
工手（ざいく）に髣髴（さもにたり）。蟻（あり）の寸分（すんぶん）にして至小（ゑひせう）なれども。或（あるひ）は洷（とうくみ）あるひは

現代語訳
この水滸伝である。洪信が龍虎山の邪悪な力によって世を乱し、宋江が蓼児洼の義によって世を治める。邪悪とは蛇のことであり、義とは蟻のことである。蛇は百丈もの長さで巨大であるけれども、六月に見る裏富士の麦わら細工に似ているに過ぎない。蟻は寸分ほどで極めて小さいけれども、時には堤防を決壊させ、時には淵を作る。邪悪が大きいのは成し遂げやすく、義が小さいのは成し遂げ難い。
その小さなもので大きなものに勝つということで、お子様方に義を勧めて、百八人の豪傑にささやかな力を合わせて序文を記すことは意味のあることである。

This is the Water Margin tale. Hong Xin brought chaos to the world through the evil forces of Dragon-Tiger Mountain, while Song Jiang brought order through the righteousness of Liangshan Marsh. Evil is like a serpent, while righteousness is like an ant. Though a serpent may be a hundred fathoms long and enormous, it merely resembles the wheat-straw crafts of Mount Fuji's reverse side seen in the sixth month. Though an ant is but an inch in size and extremely small, it can sometimes break through embankments or create deep pools. Great evil is easy to accomplish, while small righteousness is difficult to achieve.
That the small can triumph over the great - with this message, I encourage righteousness in children and write this preface by combining the modest strength of the 108 heroes.
