そもそも、天文年間の末期に商人があって、西洋のイタリア国のローマの都から来て、船を豊後国に寄港させた。その航路を調べると、西の海から南方に向かって行き、南方から北方に向かって日本に来るので、日本の人はこれを呼んで南蛮人とする。その船の中を見ると、商人や船員すべて合わせて二百余人。その中で服装が一般の人と異なる人二名を見る。一人をサン・フランシスコ・シャビエルと言い、一人をガスパルと言う。この二人を称してパードレと言う。これは和尚と翻訳する。また一人の付き添いの者が

Originally, at the end of the Tenmun era, there were merchants who came from Rome, the capital of the Western country of Italy, and anchored their ship in Bungo Province. When we examine their sea route, they traveled from the western seas toward the south, then from the south toward the north to reach Japan, so the Japanese people call them "Nanban-jin" (Southern Barbarians).
