**塵劫記 序**
山城国葛野郡嵯峨村の人、吉田光由（よしだ・みつよし）。
近ごろ、ある人が私の粗末な門を叩いてきた。眉をひそめ（思い悩んだ様子で）、袖の中から四巻の書を取り出して持参し、書名と序跋を書いてほしいと求めた。私がそれを開いて読んでみると、まことに算法の霊枢（神髄・根本）というべき書であった。私が「これは誰の作ですか」と尋ねると、光由は答えて言った。「私は幼少のころより算法を好んでやまず、諸家の算法書のうち、煩雑なものは削り、粗略なものは詳しく補い、集めてまとめたもので、これは私が著したものです。この（書は）……製した算書……」

**Preface to the *Jinkōki***
By Yoshida Mitsuyoshi, a native of Sagamura, Kadono District, Yamashiro Province.
Recently, a certain person came and knocked at my humble gate, his brow furrowed with concern. He drew forth from his sleeve four volumes of a book and requested that I write a title and preface and postface for them. When I opened and read through the work, it was truly the spiritual essence (*reisu*) — the very core — of the art of calculation. I asked, "Who composed this?" Mitsuyoshi replied: "Since my youth I have had an abiding passion for the art of calculation. Of the various works on calculation by different authors, I have pruned what was excessive and elaborated what was too brief, compiled and assembled them — and this is what I myself have written. This [work] is a book of calculation [he] produced…"
