LE SINGE ET LE DAUPHIN.
C'était chez les Grecs un usage
Que sur la mer tous voyageurs
Menaient avec eux en voyage
Singes et chiens de bateleurs.
Un navire en cet équipage
Non loin d'Athènes fit naufrage.
Sans les dauphins tout eût péri.
Cet animal est fort ami
De notre espèce: en son histoire
Pline le dit; il faut le croire.
Il sauva donc tout ce qu'il put.
Même un singe en cette occurrence,
Profitant de la ressemblance,
Lui pensa devoir son salut:
Un dauphin le prit pour un homme,
Et sur son dos le fit asseoir
Si gravement, qu'on eût cru voir
Ce chanteur que tant on renomme.
Le dauphin l'allait mettre à bord,
Quand, par hasard, il lui demande:
Etes-vous d'Athènes la grande?
Oui, dit l'autre, on m'y connaît fort:
S'il vous y survient quelque affaire,

猿と海豚
古代ギリシア人の間では、
海を旅する者は皆、
猿や芸人の犬を
道連れに連れて行く習わしがあった。
そのような積み荷を載せた船が
アテネの近くで難破した。
海豚がいなければ、皆死んでいただろう。
この動物は我々人間の
大の友である。プリニウスが
その博物誌の中で述べており、それを信じるべきである。
海豚は救えるものは皆救った。
その際、一匹の猿までも、
人間との類似を利用して、
自分も助かるに違いないと思った。
一頭の海豚が猿を人間と間違えて、
背中に乗せたのだが、
その様子はあまりに厳かで、
あの名高い吟遊詩人を見ているようであった。
海豚が猿を船に運ぼうとした時、
ふと尋ねた。
「あなたは偉大なるアテネの方ですか？」
「ええ」と相手は言った「私はそこでよく知られています。

THE MONKEY AND THE DOLPHIN
It was a custom among the Greeks
That all travelers on the sea
Brought with them on their voyage
Monkeys and performers' dogs.
A ship with such cargo
Shipwrecked not far from Athens.
Without the dolphins all would have perished.
This animal is a great friend
Of our species: Pliny says so
In his history; we must believe it.
It saved therefore all it could.
Even a monkey on this occasion,
Taking advantage of the resemblance,
Thought it owed its salvation to this:
A dolphin took it for a man,
And made it sit on its back
So gravely, that one would have thought to see
That singer of such renown.
The dolphin was about to put it aboard,
When, by chance, it asked:
Are you from Athens the great?
Yes, said the other, I am well known there:
