LE RENARD AYANT LA QUEUE COUPÉE.
Un vieux renard, mais des plus fins,
Grand croqueur de poulets, grand preneur de lapin□
Sentant son renard d'une lieue,
Fut enfin au piège attrapé.
Par grand hasard en étant échappé,
Non pas franc, car pour gage il y laissa sa queue,
S'étant, dis-je, sauvé sans queue et tout honteux,
Pour avoir des pareils (comme il était habile),
Un jour que les renards tenaient conseil entre eux:
Que faisons-nous, dit-il, de ce poids inutile,
Et qui va balayant tous les sentiers fangeux?
Que nous sert cette queue? Il faut qu'on se la coupe:
Si l'on me croit, chacun s'y résoudra.
Votre avis est fort bon, dit quelqu'un de la troupe;
Mais tournez-vous, de grâce, et l'on vous répondra.
A ces mots il se fit une telle huée
Que le pauvre écourté ne put être entendu.
Prétendre ôter la queue eût été temps perdu.
La mode en fut continuée.

尻尾を切られたキツネ
年老いたキツネがいた、しかし最も狡猾な者の一匹で、
鶏を大いに食い荒らし、ウサギを大いに捕らえる者で
一里先からでもキツネの匂いがするほどだったが、
ついに罠にかかってしまった。
大いなる幸運によってそこから逃れたものの、
無傷ではなく、証拠として尻尾をそこに残してきた。
つまり、尻尾なしで恥ずかしそうに逃げ帰ったのだが、
仲間を得るため（彼は抜け目がなかったので）、
ある日キツネたちが互いに会議を開いているときに：
我々は何をしているのか、と彼は言った、この無用な重荷で、
泥だらけの小道をすべて掃いて回るようなものを？
この尻尾が我々に何の役に立つというのか？切り落とすべきだ：
もし私の言葉を信じるなら、皆がそう決心するだろう。
あなたの意見はとても良い、と群れの誰かが言った；
しかし振り返ってください、そうすればお答えしましょう。

THE FOX WITH HIS TAIL CUT OFF
An old fox, but one of the craftiest,
A great devourer of chickens, great catcher of rabbits,
Smelling of fox from a league away,
Was finally caught in a trap.
By great chance having escaped from it,
Not unscathed, for as proof he left his tail there,
Having, I say, saved himself without a tail and quite ashamed,
To gain companions (as he was clever),
One day when the foxes were holding council among themselves:
What are we doing, said he, with this useless burden,
That goes sweeping all the muddy paths?
What use is this tail to us? We must cut it off:
If you believe me, each one will resolve to do so.
Your advice is very good, said someone from the group;
But turn around, please, and we will answer you.
At these words there arose such a hubbub
That the poor bob-tailed one could not be heard.
To claim to remove the tail would have been wasted time.
The custom was continued.
