LE RAT ET L'HUÎTRE.
Un rat hôte d'un champ, rat de peu de cervelle,
Des lares paternels un jour se trouva soûl.
Il laisse là le champ, le grain et la javelle,
Va courir le pays, abandonne son trou.
Sitôt qu'il fut hors de sa case:
Que le monde, dit-il, est grand et spacieux!
Voilà les Apennins, et voici le Caucase!
La moindre taupinée était mont à ses yeux.
Au bout de quelques jours le voyageur arrive
En un certain canton où Téthys sur la rive
Avait laissé mainte huître; et notre rat d'abord
Crut voir, en les voyant, des vaisseaux de haut bord.
Certes, dit-il, mon père était un pauvre sire!
Il n'osait voyager, craintif au dernier point.
Pour moi, j'ai déjà vu le maritime empire:
J'ai passé les déserts; mais nous n'y bûmes point.
D'un certain magister le rat tenait ces choses,
Et les disait à travers champs,
N'étant point de ces rats qui, les livres rongeants,
Se font savants jusques aux dents.

鼠と牡蠣
畑に住む一匹の鼠、知恵の足りない鼠が、
ある日、先祖代々の家庭の神々に飽きてしまった。
そこで畑も、穀物も、刈り束も捨て置いて、
国中を駆け回り、自分の穴を見捨てた。
自分の住処から出るやいなや：
「なんと世界は広くて大きいのだろう！」と彼は言った。
「あそこにアペニン山脈があり、ここにコーカサス山脈がある！」
どんな小さなもぐらの塚も彼の目には山であった。
数日後、この旅人は

THE RAT AND THE OYSTER
A rat, inhabitant of a field, a rat of little brain,
One day found himself weary of his paternal lares.
He leaves there the field, the grain and the sheaf,
Goes to roam the country, abandons his hole.
As soon as he was out of his dwelling:
"How great and spacious the world is!" he said.
"There are the Apennines, and here is the Caucasus!"
The smallest molehill was a mountain to his eyes.
After a few days the traveler arrives
In a certain region where Tethys on the shore
Had left many an oyster; and our rat at first
Thought he saw, upon seeing them, ships of the line.
"Certainly," he said, "my father was a poor fellow!
He dared not travel, fearful to the utmost degree.
As for me, I have already seen the maritime empire:
I have crossed the deserts; but we did not drink there."
The rat held these things from a certain schoolmaster,
And told them throughout the fields,
Not being one of those rats who, gnawing books,
Make themselves learned to their teeth.
