LE RENARD ET LE CHAT.
Le chat et le renard, comme beaux petits saints,
S'en allaient en pèlerinage.
C'étaient deux vrais tartufs, deux archipatelins;
Deux francs patte-pelus, qui des frais du voyage,
Croquant mainte volaille, escroquant maint fromage,
S'indemnisaient à qui mieux mieux.
Le chemin était long, et partant ennuyeux;
Pour l'accourcir ils disputèrent.
La dispute est d'un grand secours:
Sans elle on dormirait toujours.
Nos pèlerins s'égosillèrent;
Ayant bien discuté, l'on parla du prochain
Le renard au chat dit enfin:
Tu prétends être fort habile:
En sais-tu tant que moi? J'ai cent ruses au sac.
Non, dit l'autre: je n'ai qu'un tour dans mon bissac;
Mais je soutiens qu'il en vaut mille.
Eux de recommencer la dispute à l'envi.

狐と猫
猫と狐は、美しい小さな聖人のように、
巡礼の旅に出かけた。
彼らは二匹の真の偽善者、二匹の大ペテン師だった。
二匹の正真正銘の詐欺師で、旅の費用として、
数多くの鶏を食べ、数多くのチーズを盗み取り、

THE FOX AND THE CAT
The cat and the fox, like beautiful little saints,
Went off on pilgrimage.
They were two true hypocrites, two arch-flatterers;
Two genuine rogues, who for the expenses of the journey,
Devouring many a fowl, pilfering many a cheese,
Compensated themselves each trying to outdo the other.
The road was long, and therefore tedious;
To shorten it they argued.
Argument is of great help:
Without it one would always sleep.
Our pilgrims raised their voices;
Having argued well, they spoke of their neighbor.
The fox finally said to the cat:
"You claim to be very clever:
Do you know as much as I? I have a hundred tricks in my bag."
"No," said the other: "I have only one trick in my knapsack;
But I maintain that it is worth a thousand."
They began to argue again competitively.
