L'un après l'autre, en ma retraite.
Nul que Dieu seul et moi n'en connaît les chemins:
Il n'est demeure plus secrète.
Un vivier que Nature y creusa de ses mains,
Inconnu des traîtres humains,
Sauvera votre république.
On le crut. Le peuple aquatique
L'un après l'autre fut porté
Sous ce rocher peu fréquenté.
Là cormoran, le bon apôtre,
Les ayant mis en un endroit
Transparent, peu creux, fort étroit,
Vous les prenait sans peine, un jour l'un, un jour l'autre.
Il leur apprit à leurs dépens
Que l'on ne doit jamais avoir de confiance
En ceux qui sont mangeurs de gens.
Ils y perdirent peu, puisque l'humaine engeance
En aurait aussi bien croqué sa bonne part.
Qu'importe qui vous mange, homme ou loup? toute panse
Me paraît une à cet égard:
Un jour plus tôt, un jour plus tard,
Ce n'est pas grande différence.

次々に、私の隠れ家へと。
神と私以外、誰もその道筋を知らない。
これほど秘密の住処はない。
自然がその手で掘った生け簀があり、
裏切り者の人間どもには知られていない、
あなたがたの共和国を救うであろう。
皆がそれを信じた。水中の民は
次々に運ばれていった
その人里離れた岩陰へと。
そこで鵜は、善良な使徒として、
彼らを一箇所に置いた後
透明で、浅く、とても狭い場所に、
一日に一匹、また一日に一匹と、苦もなく捕らえていった。
鵜は彼らに身をもって教えた
人を食らう者たちを
決して信用してはならないということを。
彼らの失うものは少なかった、なぜなら人間という種族も
同様にその分け前をむさぼり食ったであろうから。
あなたを食らうのが人間か狼か、何の違いがあろう？どの腹も
この点では同じに思える。
一日早かろうと、一日遅かろうと、
大した違いではない。

There the cormorant, the good apostle,
Having placed them in a spot
Transparent, shallow, very narrow,
Caught them without difficulty, one day one, another day another.
He taught them at their expense
That one should never have confidence
In those who are eaters of people.
They lost little by it, since the human breed
Would have likewise crunched its good share.
What matters who eats you, man or wolf? Every belly
Seems the same to me in this regard:
A day sooner, a day later,
It's no great difference.
