戴斗翁は初めから絵画への強い愛好があり、ただ食べることと絵を描くことのみに専念し、ついに葛飾派の一つの画風を興して、その画名は世に高く知られるようになった。
ここに至って、その門下に入って技を学ぶ者が多くなった。翁はこれらの弟子に教えて言った。「絵画に師はない。ただ真実を写すことに努めれば、自然と技は身につくであろう。」門人たちはこれを心配した。ある人が翁の言葉を聞いて、翁を諫めて言った。「翁は葛飾一家の画祖である。翁の画風を慕う弟子たちは、この画風を身につけたいと望んでいる。それなのになぜ他に師を求めるべきだと言うのか。離婁のような優れた視力や公輸子のような巧みな技術も、規則や道具を用いなければ、正方形や円を正しく作ることはできない。」

Master Taito had a passion for painting from the beginning, devoting himself solely to eating and painting, and eventually established a distinctive style within the Katsushika school, gaining great fame throughout the world.
At this point, many students entered his school to learn his techniques. The master taught these disciples, saying: "Painting has no teacher. If you simply strive to depict truth, you will naturally acquire skill." His pupils were troubled by this. A certain person, hearing the master's words, remonstrated with him, saying: "You are the founder of the Katsushika school. Your disciples who admire your style wish to master this very style. Why then do you tell them to seek other teachers? Even Li Lou's exceptional eyesight and Gongshu Zi's skillful craftsmanship cannot create perfect squares and circles without using rules and compasses."
