神徳をお与えにならない場所があれば、その神の威力が激しく荒れ狂い、夜霧が香りに満ちて、そのように地が靡き動くのである。
その証拠は、二、三日も前より海原を渡る船の帆に風を持たない、或いは霧が満ちて雨を催すのを見て、船人はその兆しを知り、群鳥が空中にて飛べないのも、大路に敷物をして寝る人の灯火が煙るのも、みな風がないためである。すでに思うに、地震の兆候もまた直ちに傍らの人の半身以上が見えないのも、日光に映えて虹の影を見るのも、皆同じ理屈である。どうして三日も七日も前より地気が上昇して後に大きく落下する道理があろうか。地に焼けた物すべてに潤いを注いで見よ。水が激しく湧いても荒水と養分を成さない。水をすべて言うまでも理解すべきである。私はこの年頃、穀物の価格の高さまでも思い合わせることを、最も畏れ多いことと思う。

If there are places where divine virtue is not bestowed, then the god's power rages violently, night mist fills with fragrance, and thus the earth sways and moves.
The evidence for this is that two or three days beforehand, ships crossing the seas have no wind in their sails, or when mist fills and threatens rain, sailors know these omens. Flocks of birds unable to fly in the sky, and the flickering flames of travelers sleeping on bedding spread on the main roads - all of this is due to the absence of wind. As I already think, earthquake omens are also the same: when people nearby cannot see above half their bodies, or when rainbow shadows appear reflected in sunlight - all follow the same principle. How could there be a principle where earth qi rises for three or even seven days before then falling greatly? Pour moisture onto everything scorched by earth and observe: even when water surges violently, it does not form nourishing rough water. This should be understood even without explaining everything about water. In recent years, I consider it most fearsome to contemplate even the high price of grain.
