**[Right Page — Upper Section]** In the mid-seventh month of Kyōhō 6 (1721, cyclical year *kanoto-ushi*), this was transmitted [to me]. This is the very manuscript formerly held by the late Sōjō Zōshun of Kōzen'in. It is a precious and treasured copy, and I revere it deeply. A humble student of the Vijñaptimātratā School Monk Shūei (sixth year of precepts; age eighteen) The *Hossō Tōmyō-ki* mentioned above: I had previously heard that in former years it was transmitted from Hōin Dai-sōzu Shunzoku-bō of Sezon'in to Senmyō-Shunryō-bō of Kudoku'in. On this occasion I secretly borrowed it, and within just one or two days I copied it in my own hand. I am truly overcome with joyful gratitude; I am only left feeling deep appreciation for the great benevolence of [our] revered predecessors. The scroll of this work is now held at Kudoku'in. On no account speak of it to others or show it to others. These three texts are secret writings of the entire temple. They are to be revered and kept secret. Kansei 4 (1792, cyclical year *mizunoe-ne*), eleventh month, fourth day: copying completed. Fifth day of the same month: one collation completed. Gyōkei (tenth year of precepts; age twenty-one) [Note: One manuscript's colophon reads:] Hōgen 1 (1156), autumn, ninth month: I engaged fellow dharma students to copy [this], and it was completed. On the sixth day of the same month, around the hour of *mi* (9–11 a.m.), one collation was completed with my humble eyes. Fifth-Rank Great Dharma Master of Kōfukuji: Zōshun Transmitted by the monk Kakuken --- **[Right Page — Lower Section]** Kenpō 6 (1218), autumn, ninth month, thirteenth day: copying and collation completed. Great Dharma Master Kenshū Jōkyū 2 (1220), autumn, eighth month, eighth day: copying completed. Scribe Eishun Karoku 3 (1227), eighth month, twenty-ninth day: copied using the manuscript of Chisoku-bō. One collation completed on the same day. Dharma Master Jōshin Kenchō 1 (1249), summer, fifth month, twenty-second day: copying completed. Dharma Master Senzō Kōan 3 (1280, cyclical year *kanoe-tatsu*), tenth month, fourteenth day: copied from the manuscript bestowed by my teacher Jōjitsu. Completed. A humble student: Teiei Kōan 11 (1288), first month, twenty-ninth day: copying completed. Genkō Jōji 4 (1365), first month, twenty-fifth day: On account of the Sacred Tree's procession into the capital (*shinboku gonjuraku*), the Thousand-Fascicle Sutra Ceremony (*senbu-ron*) was held at Shion'in. Having a matter requiring clarification for the purpose of presiding over that ceremony's teachings (*shōdō*), I borrowed [this text] and in the course of doing so copied it. Completed. Junior Risshi: Enben (age forty-one) [Reverse inscription:] From the year *mizunoe-saru* of the Buddha's Parinirvāṇa to the sixth year of Kōnin (815, cyclical year *kinoto-hitsuji*), the reign of Emperor Saga: 1,430 years. As recorded in the *Hossō Tōmyō-ki*. --- **[Left Page — Upper Section]** From Kōnin 6 to Jōji 4 (cyclical year *kinoto-mi*): 546 years. From the Buddha's Parinirvāṇa to Jōji 4: approximately 1,975 years. [This passage I, privately, have calculated using the *Nendaiki* (chronological records).] From the spread of Buddhism in our country [the thirteenth year of Emperor Hironiwa (*Kimmei*), cyclical year *mizunoe-saru* — "Hironiwa" refers to Emperor Kimmei] to Kōnin 6: 268 years [and so forth]. As shown in the table. From the spread of Buddhism in our country to Jōji 4: approximately 814 years. This passage I have privately calculated. From the relocation to Mount Mikasa in Jingo Keiun 2 [768, the reign of Empress Shōtoku, the era of the Kasuga Daimyōjin] to Jōji 4: approximately 594 years. This passage I have privately calculated. Last year, on the nineteenth day of the twelfth month, on the occasion of the Sacred Tree's entry into the capital, prayers were offered at Shion'in as part of the Thousand-Fascicle Ceremony [which began on the twenty-first day of the first month of the same fourth year (of Jōji), with the prayer-completion on the nineteenth day]. As I earnestly served as the presiding teacher (*shōdō*) for that ceremony, I privately calculated these chronological figures. Written on the twentieth day of the first month of Jōji 4 [1365]. Junior Risshi: Enben Eitoku 3 (1383, cyclical year *hinoto-u*), first month, twenty-sixth day: I requested the manuscript of the Sōjō of Tō'in and had it copied. Although this temple [i.e., Tō'in] had already allowed me to look at it once, there were numerous points of uncertainty regarding the characters [and so forth]. --- **[Left Page — Lower Section]** [I had been] seeking an authoritative manuscript (*shōhon*) to verify [doubtful passages], but my long-cherished wish remained unfulfilled as the days and months passed in vain. Fortunately, I have now obtained this copy and have made a transcript for preservation. At this time, the lingering cold of late winter has not yet lifted, and my frozen hands could scarcely hold a brush. Nevertheless, for the sake of the flourishing of the Buddha-Dharma, I suppressed my laziness and wetted my worn brush. Written in the corner room of the facing building (*tsumaguki-no-tsubone*) of Shūnan'in. That is all. A humble student of the Ōri school (*Ōrishū*): Kōgyō (eleventh year of precepts)
