此に掲ぐる両面の図画は明治廿二
年七月二十八日夜熊本県下に起れ
る大地震の紀念として留むべき為
め同県飽田郡高橋町(字川端)市街
被害の実況及び同地第六師団所轄
熊本城内(旧平左衛門櫓床)号砲台
近傍の土地割裂の写真に拠て図画
を作り之を欧風写真画様に模刻し
たるものなり幾多の写真中特に茲
に此の両面を撰みて模刻したるも
のは該地被害の箇処中殊に此の両
処を以て最も悲惨の箇処となせば
なり

くの大震災なり被害の地一市九郡
に亘り裂地八百九十余箇処人畜の
死傷亦少しとせず史家の説に拠る
に同震災は往古白凰七年十二月及
ひ天平十六年五月、貞観九年五月、
仁和三年七月、寛文二年十一月、享
保八年十一月、同十年九月、安永八
年九月、寛政四年二月等に於て九
州に起れる前後九回の震災と共に
永く史上に記して不忘に備ふべき
の大震災なりと云ふ

ここに掲載する両面の図画は明治22年7月28日夜に熊本県下で発生した大地震の記念として残すために、同県飽田郡高橋町（字川端）市街被害の実況および同地第六師団所轄熊本城内（旧平左衛門櫓床）砲台近傍の土地割裂の写真に基づいて図画を作成し、これを西洋風写真画様式で模刻したものである。数多くの写真の中から特にここにこの両面を選んで模刻したのは、該当地被害箇所の中でも特にこの両箇所が最も悲惨な箇所だったからである。

明治22年7月28日夜における熊本県下の震災は実に近代稀に見る大震災である。被害の地は一市九郡にわたり、裂けた地面は890余箇所、人畜の死傷も少なくない。史家の説によると、同震災は往古白鳳7年12月および天平16年5月、貞観9年5月、仁和3年7月、寛文2年11月、享保8年11月、同10年9月、安永8年9月、寛政4年2月等において九州に起こった前後9回の震災と共に永く史上に記して忘れないように備えるべき大震災であるという。

The illustrations on both sides presented here were created as a memorial to the great earthquake that occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture on the night of July 28, 1889 (Meiji 22). They are based on photographs showing the actual conditions of damage in the urban area of Takahashi Town (Kawabata district) in Akita District of the same prefecture, and ground fissures near the artillery battery (former Heizaemon turret floor) within Kumamoto Castle under the jurisdiction of the Sixth Division. The illustrations were created from these photographs and engraved in the style of Western photographic art. Among many photographs, these two scenes were specifically selected for engraving because these two locations represented the most tragic areas among all the damaged sites.

True Map of Ground Fissures at the Artillery Battery within Kumamoto Castle

The earthquake disaster in Kumamoto Prefecture on the night of July 28, 1889 (Meiji 22) was truly a great earthquake disaster rarely heard of in modern times. The damaged area extended across one city and nine districts, with over 890 ground fissures, and casualties among people and livestock were not few. According to historians, this earthquake disaster should be permanently recorded in history alongside nine previous earthquakes that occurred in Kyushu in ancient times: Hakuhō 7 (December), Tenpyō 16 (May), Jōgan 9 (May), Nin'na 3 (July), Kanbun 2 (November), Kyōhō 8 (November), Kyōhō 10 (September), An'ei 8 (September), and Kansei 4 (February), as a great earthquake disaster that should be remembered for posterity.
