此心はしがのやまごえにてよめるなり
山川の木のはをひまなくふきかけたる
が水のしがらみとなりながれおふせぬ
てい也かぜのかけたるしがらみは何もの
ぞと見ればながれもおふせぬもみぢ
にてありけり我ととひわれとこたへ
たる歌のさま也しがらみいふものは
人手して川にかくるものなり
しかるを風のかけたるといふ
ことばめづらしくとの事なり

百人一首絵抄 三十一
この歌は志賀の山越えで詠まれたものである。
山川の木の葉を隙間なく吹きかけて、
それが水のしがらみとなって流れを堰き止めている
様子である。風がかけたしがらみとは何だろう
かと見れば、流れも堰き止めてしまうもみじ
であったのだ。我と問い我と答えた
歌の趣である。しがらみというものは
人の手で川に設置するものである。
ところが風がかけたというのは
珍しい言葉遣いであり、趣深いことである。

This poem was composed while crossing the mountains of Shiga.
The wind has blown the leaves from the mountain trees densely,
and they have become a dam in the water, blocking the flow.
What is this dam that the wind has created?
Looking closely, it is autumn leaves that even
block the river's flow.
This is a poem where the poet asks himself and answers himself.
A "shigarami" (dam) is normally
something people construct by hand in a river.
However, saying that the wind created it
is an unusual expression and quite elegant.
