人袖小記来而請余題言見其記今右
評説画挙此矣因写仁和年間之徴

地震考
文政十三庚寅年七月二日申の時はかりに大に地 震ひ出
ておひたゝしくゆり動しけれは洛中の土蔵築地など大
にいたみ潰れし家居もあり土蔵の潰れしは数多ありて
築地高塀なとは大かた倒れ怪我せし人も数多なり昔
はありと聞けと近く都の土地にかくはけしきはなかり
ければ人々驚きおそれてみな〳〵家を走り出て大路に
敷ものしき仮の宿りを何くれといとなみ二三日かほどは家
の内に寝る人なく或は大寺の境内にうつり或は洛外の
川原へうつり西なる野辺につどひて夜をあかしける
現代語訳
近頃京都で大地震が発生し、数日間止まなかった。東隴庵の主人が小さな記録を携えて来て、私に題言を書くよう依頼した。その記録を見ると、今回の評説と画はこのことを取り上げている。そこで仁和年間の前兆を書いて題言に代え、ささやかにその責任を果たすものである。

地震考
文政十三年庚寅年七月二日申の刻頃に大地震が発生し、激しく揺れ動いたので、洛中の土蔵や築地などが大いに損傷し、倒壊した家もあった。土蔵の倒壊は数多くあり、築地や高い塀などはほとんど倒れ、怪我をした人も多数いた。昔にはあったと聞くが、近年都の土地でこれほど激しい地震はなかったので、人々は驚き恐れて皆家から走り出て、大通りに敷物を敷いて仮の宿を何かと準備し、二三日ほどは家の中で寝る人はなく、ある者は大寺の境内に移り、ある者は洛外の川原へ移り、西の野辺に集まって夜を明かしたのであった。

Recently, a great earthquake occurred in Kyoto and did not cease for several days. The master of Tōryōan brought a small record and requested that I write a preface. Looking at his record, I see that the current commentary and paintings address this matter. Therefore, I write about the omens of the Nin'na era in place of a preface, thus modestly fulfilling my responsibility.

Earthquake Study
On the second day of the seventh month of Bunsei 13, year of the Metal Tiger, around the hour of the Monkey, a great earthquake occurred and shook violently. The earthen storehouses and earthen walls in the capital were greatly damaged, and some houses collapsed. There were numerous collapsed storehouses, and most of the earthen walls and high fences fell down, with many people injured. Though we hear such things happened in ancient times, there had been no earthquake this severe in the capital's land in recent years, so people were surprised and frightened. Everyone ran out of their houses onto the main streets, spread out bedding to make temporary shelters with various preparations. For about two or three days, no one slept inside houses. Some moved to the precincts of great temples, others moved to riverbeds outside the capital, gathering in the western fields to pass the nights.
