豆州郡宰江川太郎左衛門上書、言大島中火発状、
其文粗曰、其火出石焼、菜蔬死而民尚無恙予聞大
島在豆州南、如遠近大小則未有聞之、予求之所識
則坊間有蔵南海港道図而甚秘焉者、就請而竊写
之、旧図大島延袤若千里云、此百四五十年時所歩、
似与今上書之文不合、又索之於所識医師中橋中
村宗厳、言隣里之際有工平五郎大島人、頗諳大島
之風土、宜諮問、予依宗厳召之、平五郎所言同本州
之俗其名物無文字、而邦言島語相半、至若其業有

豆州の郡宰江川太郎左衛門が上書して、大島で火災が発生した状況を報告した。
その文章の大意は以下のとおりである。その火は石から出て燃え、野菜は枯れたが民は無事である、と聞いている。大島は豆州の南にあると聞いているが、遠近や大小については詳しく聞いていない。私が知人に尋ねたところ、民間に南海港道図を蔵している者がいるが、極めて秘密にしているとのことである。そこで請うてひそかにこれを写した。古図によると大島の広さは数千里ほどと云う。これは百四、五十年前の時代に測ったもので、今回の上書の文章とは合わないようである。また知り合いの医師中橋中村宗厳に尋ねたところ、近隣に工平五郎という大島出身の人がおり、大島の風土をよく知っているので相談すべきだと言った。私は宗厳を通じて彼を呼んだ。平五郎の話によると、（大島の）風俗は本州と同じであるが、その名物には文字がなく、日本語と島の言葉が半々である。その生業については

The district magistrate of Izu Province, Egawa Tarozaemon, submitted a report describing the outbreak of fire on Oshima Island.
The general content of his document was as follows: The fire emerged from stones and burned, vegetables died but the people remained unharmed. I have heard that Oshima is located south of Izu Province, but I have not heard details about its distance or size. When I inquired among my acquaintances, I learned that there are people among the townspeople who possess charts of the Nankai maritime routes, but they keep them highly secret. I therefore requested and secretly copied them. According to old maps, the extent of Oshima is said to be several thousand ri. This was surveyed 140-150 years ago and seems inconsistent with the current written report. I also inquired of an acquaintance, the physician Nakahashi Nakamura Sogen, who said that in the neighborhood there is a man named Ko Heigoro from Oshima who knows the climate and customs of Oshima well, and should be consulted. I summoned him through Sogen. According to Heigoro's account, the customs are the same as those of the main island (Honshu), but their local products have no written characters, and Japanese and island dialects are mixed half and half.
