観世音菩薩普門品
爾時無尽意菩薩即従座起偏袒右肩合掌
向仏而作是言世尊観世音菩薩以何因縁
名観世音仏告無尽意菩薩善男子若有無
量百千万億衆生受諸苦悩聞是観世音菩
薩一心称名観世音菩薩即時観其音声皆
得解脱

観世音菩薩普門品第二十五
その時、無尽意菩薩が座から立ち上がり、右肩を露わにして合掌し、仏に向かってこのように申し上げた。「世尊よ、観世音菩薩は何故に観世音と名付けられるのでしょうか。」仏は無尽意菩薩に告げられた。「善男子よ、もし無量百千万億の衆生が諸々の苦悩を受けているとき、この観世音菩薩のことを聞いて一心に観世音菩薩の名を称えるならば、観世音菩薩は即座にその音声を観じて、皆を苦悩から解脱させるのである。」

Chapter 25: The Universal Gate of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva
At that time, the Bodhisattva Akṣayamati rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, joined his palms together, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, for what reason is the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara called 'Avalokiteśvara' (Observer of the Sounds of the World)?" The Buddha told the Bodhisattva Akṣayamati: "Good son, if immeasurable hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of living beings who are experiencing various sufferings hear of this Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara and single-mindedly call upon the name of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara will immediately perceive their voices and free them all from their sufferings."
