現代語訳
もし百千万億の衆生が金銀・瑠璃・硨磲・瑪瑙・珊瑚・琥珀・真珠などの宝を求めて大海に入ったとする。たとえ黒風がその船を吹き飛ばし、羅刹鬼の国に漂流させたとしても、その中でただ一人でも観世音菩薩の名を称える者があれば、これらの人々は皆、羅刹の難から解脱することができる。この因縁によって観世音と名付けられる。

If hundreds of thousands of millions of sentient beings should enter the great ocean seeking treasures such as gold, silver, lapis lazuli, giant clamshells, agate, coral, amber, pearls, and other precious things, even if black winds should blow their ships and cast them adrift to the land of rakshasa demons, if among them there should be even one person who calls upon the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, then all these people will be delivered from the calamity of the rakshasas. For this reason, he is called Avalokiteshvara (Observer of the Sounds of the World).
