One must not neglect treatment in accordance with the season. In the fifth month of the late part of Bunkyū 2 (1862), measles began to spread throughout society in general. From the middle of the sixth month, it spread greatly across all of Edo. In every household, four or five people — or in some cases the entire family — fell ill. For many days, there were many who could not carry on their daily trades and livelihoods, and there was not a single person who was not fearful. Though this disease has periodically spread as an epidemic since ancient times, there has never been an outbreak like this one. Therefore, in order to leave a record for posterity — if only as casual fireside talk — I have compiled this small volume. Written by Yōjōtei Shigasai
