光明皇后が千人を入浴させる図

『大日本史』によると、天平の初めに僧玄昉が唐から帰国すると、帝は紫の袈裟を賜い僧正とし、内道場に安置した。后（光明皇后）は甚だしく寵愛し優遇したが、かなり醜聞があったという。
当時のことが偲ばれる。
小中村清矩が言うには、『続紀』巻二十二（二十八丁）に光明皇后が正一位を授けられたとみえるが、これは誤りである。その証拠は同書巻十（五丁）に「神亀四年十一月、従三位藤原夫人に食封一千戸を賜う」とみえ、同（二十三丁）「天平元年八月の詔で正三位藤原夫人を立てて皇后とす」とある。皇后に立てられた時は正三位であった。△皇后に立てられた時が正三位であれば、聖武帝即位の折に正一位を授けられたというのは誤りであることは明らかである。天平宝字に至って正一位に進んだのを混同した間違いであろう。

According to the Dai Nihon-shi, in the early Tenpyō period when the monk Genbō returned from Tang China, the Emperor granted him purple robes and made him High Priest (sōjō), placing him in the inner chapel. The Empress (Kōmyō) showed him great favor and special treatment, but there were considerable scandalous rumors.
One can imagine the circumstances of those times.
Konakamura Kiyonori states that in the Shoku Nihongi, volume 22 (folio 28), it appears that Empress Kōmyō was granted First Rank, but this is an error. The proof is that in the same work, volume 10 (folio 5), it states "In the eleventh month of Jinki 4, Junior Third Rank Lady Fujiwara was granted a food fief of one thousand households," and in the same work (folio 23) "By imperial edict of the eighth month of Tenpyō 1, Senior Third Rank Lady Fujiwara was established as Empress." When she was made Empress, she held Senior Third Rank. △Since she held Senior Third Rank when made Empress, it is clear that the claim she was granted First Rank upon Emperor Shōmu's accession is erroneous. This is likely a mistake confusing her later promotion to First Rank during the Tenpyō Hōji era.
