兼（かね）て用意（いようい）の船（ふね）なればすぐにとも綱（つな）をとき出（いだ）しけるに聖人（しやうにん）以前（いぜん）の舟（ふね）
ともしろしめさず時（とき）あしゝてはせ向（むか）ひ便舟（びんせん）と仰（おふせ）有（あり）けれは常忍（じやうにん）これ
を見（み）参（まいら）せあれこそいつそや舟（ふね）かしたりし客僧（きやくそう）也まことによの常（つね）な
らぬえにしとて又（また）おなし舟（ふね）にのせ参（まい）らせ席（せき）ちかく招（まねき）奉（たてまつ）り折（をり）にふ
れたる海士（あま）の舟（ふね）をのが友（とも）々あさりして浮世（うきよ）を渡（わた）る釣（つり）の糸（いと）浅（あさ）ましさよと
打物語（うちものがた）り常忍（じやうにん）また聖人（しやうにん）にとひ参（まい）らする事（こと）あり御僧（おんそう）は此比（このころ）かまくらに
渡（わた）らせたまふとやしからは日蓮（にちれん）と云 法師（ほふし）出（いて）かまくらの諸宗（しよしう）をさま〳〵に
いひちらし法華経（ほけきやう）を説（とき）し事（こと）しろしめさんさあらはすこし其（その）趣（おもむき）を語（かた）
らせたまへ我（われ）はしゆつしいとまなくとくと事（こと）をもしらぬで侍（はべ）ると有（あり）
ければ聖人（しやうにん）聞（きこ）しめししからば聞（きゝ）覚（おぼ）えし物語（ものがたり）申入（まうしいる）べしと仰（おふせ）られ居（ゐ）だけ
だかに座（ざ）を組（くみ）給ひ諸経（しよきやう）に法華経（ほけきやう）のすくれたること十界（しつかい）皆成仏（かいしやうふつ）のむね

現代語訳
あらかじめ用意していた船なので、すぐに船の綱を解いて出発したところ、聖人は以前の船旅のことをご存知でなかった。時間が悪くて急いで向かった便船だとおっしゃったので、常忍はこれを見て「あれこそ、いつかの日に船を貸した客僧でございます。本当に世の中の尋常でない縁というものです」と言って、また同じ船に乗せ申し上げ、席を近くに招いて差し上げた。折しも通りかかった海士の船について、「彼らが仲間同士で漁をして浮世を渡る釣りの糸よ、情けないことだ」と語り合った。常忍がまた聖人にお尋ね申し上げることがあった。「お坊様は近頃鎌倉にいらっしゃったとか。それでしたら日蓮という法師が出て、鎌倉の諸宗をさまざまに批判し、法華経を説いたことをご存知でしょう。もしそうでしたら、少しその趣旨をお話しください。私は出家の身で暇もなく、詳しいことを知らないのです」と申し上げた。そこで聖人は「お聞きになりたいのでしたら、聞き覚えた話をお話ししましょう」とおっしゃられ、居住まいを正して座を組まれ、諸経の中で法華経が優れていること、十界皆成仏の教えについて、経典を引用し論書を引用して、まことに富楼那のような弁舌をもって詳細にこの趣旨を説かれた。

Since the boat had been prepared in advance, they immediately untied the mooring rope and departed. The saint was not familiar with previous boat journeys, and when he mentioned that due to poor timing they had hurriedly sought passage on a convenient vessel, Jōnin saw this and said, "That must be the guest monk to whom we once lent our boat. Truly, this is an extraordinary karmic connection in this world." He invited the saint aboard the same boat again, offering him a seat nearby. As they passed a fisherman's boat, they conversed about how "those companions fish together to make their way through this floating world with their fishing lines—how pitiful it is." Jōnin then had something to ask the saint: "Honorable monk, I hear you were recently in Kamakura. If so, you must know about a priest named Nichiren who appeared there, criticized the various Buddhist schools of Kamakura in different ways, and preached the Lotus Sutra. If you do know of this, please tell us a little about the gist of his teachings. As a monk myself, I have no leisure time and do not know the details." The saint replied, "If you wish to hear about it, I shall tell you what I have heard and remember." He straightened his posture, crossed his legs in meditation position, and explained in detail how the Lotus Sutra excels among all sutras and about the doctrine that all beings in the ten realms can attain Buddhahood, citing sutras and treatises with truly eloquent speech like that of Pūrṇa.
