疱瘡心得草序（ほうさうこゝろへぐさじよ）
語（ご）に曰（いわく）父母（ちゝはゝ）は唯（たゞ）その子の病（やまひ）を憂（うれ）ふとのたまへり
父母（ちゝはゝ）の子（こ）の病（やまひ）をいたわり思（おも）ふ事（こと）のやるせなき
や我（わが）日（ひ）の本（もと）にもさま〴〵の病（やまひ）多（おゝ）き中（なか）にも疱（ほう）
瘡（さう）ほど軽（かろ）き重（おも）きによらず親（おや）の心（こゝろ）恐（おそ）れ苦（くる）しきは
あらじげに人間（にんげん）ひと世（よ）の間（あいだ）の大厄（たいやく）ならん然（しか）るに疱瘡（ほうさう）は
年（ねん）〳〵いつとなく流行（はやり）すれど時候（じかう）によりてか今年（ことし）此（この）
病（やまひ）諸国（しよこく）に遍（あまね）く時行（じかう）遁（のがれ）がたきに至（いた）るされば無（む）かし／ゟ（より）
疱瘡（ほうさう）の名方（めいほう）は中華（から）倭（やまと）の大醫（たいゐ）の文（ぶん）にあまた載（のせ）有（あり）し

この本は疱瘡が初めて日本に渡った事から、初熱より日数の心得の事ども、並びに麻疹・水痘の心得、疱瘡患者の介抱・看病人の心得等まで、詳しく平仮名で記して世に広く伝えることを願うのみである。

疱瘡心得草序
語に曰く「父母は唯その子の病を憂う」と仰せられている。
父母が子の病を労り思う事の切なさよ。我が日の本にも様々な病が多い中でも、疱瘡ほど軽い重いによらず親の心を恐れ苦しめるものはないであろう。まさに人間一世の間の大厄であろう。然るに疱瘡は年々いつとなく流行するけれど、時候によってか、今年この病が諸国に遍く時行し、逃れがたきに至っている。されば昔より疱瘡の名方は中華・大和の大医の文に数多載せ有りしといえども、俗家の用心・心得になるべき書はいまだ見

Preface to Hōsō Kokoroegusa
It is said in the classics: "Parents worry only about their children's illnesses."
How heartbreaking is the parents' care and concern for their child's illness! Among the many various diseases in our Japan, there is probably nothing that frightens and torments parents' hearts more than smallpox, regardless of whether it is mild or severe. It is truly a great calamity during one's lifetime. However, smallpox spreads unknowingly year after year, but perhaps due to the season, this year this disease has spread widely throughout all provinces and has become inescapable. Therefore, although famous prescriptions for smallpox have been recorded in great numbers in the writings of great physicians of China and Japan since ancient times, books that could serve as precautions and guidance for ordinary households have not yet been seen
