一 原書ハ「アラビアン。ナイトス」ト云ヒ専ラ欧洲ニ行ハレ毎戸ニ蔵シ毎人
読マサルナク読ム者為ニ寝食ヲ忘ルヽニ至ルト云フ
一 欧洲諸家此書ノ出処ヲ論スル一ナラス或ハ比耳西亜ト云ヒ或ハ
印度ト云ヒ或ハ亜刺比亜ト云フ然レトモ其材料トスル事物ニ至リ
テハ尽ク古書中ノ最モ古キ者ノ中ニ証ヲ取ルヘク其風俗思

一 此書ヲ読ム者前後二部ト做シテ看ンコトヲ要ス前ニ記スル所ハ奇

序文
一 原書は「アラビアン・ナイツ」といい、もっぱらヨーロッパで流行し、どの家庭にも蔵され、誰もが読まないということはなく、読む者は寝食を忘れるほどになるという。
一 ヨーロッパの諸学者がこの書の出所を論じることは一つや二つではない。ある者はペルシアといい、ある者はインドといい、ある者はアラビアという。しかしながら、その材料とする事物については、すべて古書の中の最も古いものの中に証拠を求めることができ、その風俗・思想・宗教がすべて回教（イスラム教）を宗とするのは、諸学者の一致するところである。
一 この書を読む者は前後二部として見ることを要する。前に記すところは奇幻きわまりなく、すべて想像の中に想像を生じ、世人を驚かすために［以下続く］
