作られたもののようである。後に記すところは、実際の出来事の中で最も奇異なものを集めたものである。ゆえにこれを見て正史とみなすべきであり、また読む者に益することも少なくない。
一 記者の意図がどのようなものであるかに関わらず、書中には性格・意志・計謀・生活の様子を記述するさまざまな形があり、帝王・朝臣・船乗りなどが語るところは、それぞれその状況を尽くしている。天神・地鬼・幻術・妖法の不思議なもの、人の心の道徳が自然に備わっていること、善悪には必ずその応報があることなどは、また教訓の道具となし、兼ねて世の中の様子や人情を知り尽くすための材料とするに足りている。
一 以上に掲げるところは私の個人的見解によるものではない。すべて英国の学者「タウンゼンド」氏の自序に拠るものである。

appears to be something created for that purpose. What is recorded later is a collection of the most extraordinary real events. Therefore, this should be regarded as authentic history, and it provides no small benefit to readers.
1. Regardless of the author's intentions, the book contains various descriptions of character, will, schemes, and ways of life. The stories told by emperors, court officials, sailors, and others each fully capture their circumstances. The wonders of heavenly spirits, earthly demons, magic arts, and supernatural methods; the natural endowment of human moral conscience; the principle that good and evil inevitably receive their just rewards—these also serve as tools for moral instruction and provide sufficient material for understanding the ways of the world and human nature.
