ノ一叚ニ比スレバ未ダ奇トスルニ足ラズ候ト

姫である新皇后は、鶯の舌でも巧妙さが足りず、鳳凰の声でもかえって硬く感じられるような美しい声で、なめらかによどみなく一つの奇談を語り終えられると、帝はその奇妙さを称賛してやまれなかった。新皇后はゆっくりと帝に向かい、「ただ今お聞かせした物語は、漁夫の一話に比べれば、まだ奇とするに足りません」と申し上げる。帝はますます興味深く思い、「それならばその漁夫の物語を早く聞かせてください」とお願いになると、新皇后はすぐに次の奇談を語り始められた。

The new empress, who was a princess, possessed a voice so melodious that even a nightingale's tongue would seem insufficiently skillful, and even a phoenix's call would appear harsh by comparison. With such enchanting tones, she spoke smoothly and without pause, finishing her wondrous tale. The emperor could not cease praising its marvel. The new empress slowly turned to the emperor and said, "The story I have just related to you is not yet strange enough when compared to the tale of a fisherman." The emperor found this even more intriguing and requested, "Then please tell me that fisherman's story quickly." The new empress immediately began to relate the next extraordinary tale.
