さて六位の臣は大将のもとへ参り、様々のもてなしを受け、御返事をいただいて帰参することを申し上げると、人々はささやき合って喜び合った。このようにしているうちに、その日も暮れてしまったので、大将殿が中将殿をしきりにお呼びになったけれども、ふさぎ込んで出ておいでにならない。思いあまって西の対の妹の女御の方においでになって申し上げられたことには、「こちらにいる人は九月十七日より契りを交わして参りました。まだ一度も夜を共に過ごしたことがございません。つらいことに、今夜初めて別れるならば、この人の嘆きはいかばかりかと思われます。どうしてこのように苦しいことがございましょうか。ご賢察くださって、お話しください。そのように御」
