辱（はづ）かしめんと藺-相-如聞て肯（あへ）て与（とも）に会（くわい）せず廉頗（れんば）朝（ちやう）する
毎（ごと）に藺-相-如は病（やまひ）と称（しやう）じて廉頗（れんば）と列（れつ）をあらそはず一日 藺（りん）
相如（しやうぢよ）出るに廉頗（れんば）が来（きた）るを見て車を引て避（さけ）匿（かく）る。藺相（りんしやう）
如（ぢよ）が家人（けにん）等（ら）諫（いさめ）ていはく臣（しん）等（ら）君に事（つかゆ）ることは君が高義（かうぎ）を
慕（したふ）がゆへなり。今 廉頗（れんば）悪言（あくごん）をなすに君 避（さけ）匿（かく）れて恐（おそ）るゝ
事の甚（はなはだ）しきは何ぞや。藺-相-如がいはくわれ秦王にさへ臆（をく）せず
其 君臣（くんしん）を辱（はづ）かしめたり。何ぞ今 廉将軍（れんしやうぐん）を畏（をそ）れんや。我思ふに
強秦（きやうしん）の兵（へい）を趙にくはへざるは廉頗（れんば）と我と有￣ル を以てなり。今両
人 闘（たゝか）ひ争（あらそ）はゞ其 勢（いきほ）ひともに死（し）なん我かくのごとくする事は国家（こくか）
の急（きう）を先（さき）にして私（わたくし）のあたを後にするなりと廉頗（れんば）是を伝（つた）へ

辱めるだろう」と。藺相如はこれを聞いて、あえて廉頗と会うことはしなかった。廉頗が朝廷に出仕するたびに、藺相如は病気と称して廉頗と席次を争うことはしなかった。ある日、藺相如が外出した際に廉頗が来るのを見て、車を引いて避けて隠れた。藺相如の家臣たちが諫めて言った。「私たちがあなたにお仕えするのは、あなたの高い義を慕うからです。今、廉頗が悪口を言うのに、あなたが避け隠れて恐れることが甚だしいのは何故ですか。」藺相如が言った。「私は秦王にさえ臆することなく、その君臣を辱めた。どうして今、廉将軍を恐れるだろうか。私が思うに、強い秦の軍が趙に加えられないのは、廉頗と私がいるからである。今、二人が戦い争えば、その勢いで共に死ぬことになろう。私がこのようにするのは、国家の急務を先にして、私怨を後にするからである」と。廉頗はこれを伝え聞いて大いに恥じ、藺相如の門に至り、自ら上半身を露わにし、鞭を背負って罪を謝し、ついに互いに喜んで生死を共にする交わりを結んだ。

One day, when Lin Xiangru went out and saw Lian Po coming, he had his carriage turned around to avoid and hide from him. Lin Xiangru's retainers remonstrated, saying, "We serve you because we admire your high righteousness. Now when Lian Po speaks ill of you, why do you avoid and hide from him with such extreme fear?" Lin Xiangru said, "I did not cower even before the King of Qin and humiliated him and his ministers. Why should I now fear General Lian? I believe that the reason the strong armies of Qin are not brought against Zhao is because both Lian Po and I are here. If we two were to fight and quarrel now, we would both die from the conflict. My acting in this way puts the urgent needs of the state first and personal grudges last." When Lian Po heard this reported to him, he was greatly ashamed. He went to Lin Xiangru's gate, bared his torso, and carried a bundle of switches on his back to apologize for his offense. Finally, they rejoiced together and formed a bond of shared life and death.
