色に
出にけり
我恋（わがこひ）は

人のとふまで
右の哥の心はわれはずいぶんとしの
ぶと思ひしに人のふしんして物をお
もふかととひけるにつけてそれほどよと
ほかにあらはれたる恋のもの
ふかき事よさてわが心も今
はしのびよはりたるよと心
の内にうちなげきて
いへるなりもつともせつ

平兼盛（たいらのかねもり）
忍ぶれど
色に
出でにけり
我が恋は
物や
思うと
人の問うまで
この歌の意味は、私はずいぶんと隠し通そうと思っていたのに、人が不審に思って「何か物思いをしているのか」と尋ねるほどに、それほど表に現れてしまった恋の、なんと深いことよ。さて、我が心も今は隠し通す力も弱くなってしまったなあと、心の内でため息をついて詠んだものである。まことに切ない恋路で、情趣深い歌である。

Taira no Kanemori
Though I tried to hide it,
my love has
shown itself
in my appearance—
so much so that people
ask me
if something troubles me.
The meaning of this poem is: Though I thought I could keep it completely hidden, people became suspicious and asked "Are you troubled by something?" to the extent that my love became so apparent to others—how deep this love must be! Now my heart has grown weak in its ability to conceal my feelings, and I composed this poem with a sigh in my heart. This is truly about painful love, and it is a poem rich in emotional depth.
