現代語訳
【上段】
昔々のこと、山田某という人の事であったが、神田の八丁堀川に善本大夫という人がいた。女房をお綾といい、やさしい器量も中程度で、不人相だったから世間で「綾夫人」とあだ名を付けた。
善本夫婦の間に子がないことを悲しみ、日本中の神仏を拝み倒していた。するとある時、二人の夢にカルタの釈迦十を飲むと見て、一人の男子を設けた。名を釈迦十郎と呼び、この子は五、六歳より他の子供と違い、高慢で長い着物に銀の煙管、髪も床屋で結わせて、粋なことばかりを好んだ。

【Upper Section】
Long, long ago, in the story of a certain Mr. Yamada, there lived a man named Zenhon Dayū near the Hatchōbori canal in Kanda. His wife was called Oaya, and though she was gentle, her looks were mediocre and her features plain, so people nicknamed her "Lady Aya."
The Zenhon couple grieved over having no children and prayed earnestly to gods and buddhas throughout Japan. Then one time, both dreamed of swallowing the "Shaka Ten" (the ten of clubs) from a karuta card deck, and they had a son. They named him Shakajūrō, and from the age of five or six, this child was different from other children - arrogant, wearing long kimono with a silver pipe, having his hair done at the barber's, and favoring only stylish things.
