梅園草木図譜後に題す 【朱落款】
私は絵画において風神（精神性）を第一とし、形や色は次のものと考えている。
時として形だけに頼ることもあるが、今では両方を兼ね備えることは得難いものである。
その写生において得難いことであろうか。毛利恵梅園は
この花卉の類数百種を描き、またその傍らに
正名と異名を記して考証の備えとした。これは本草学
の定説を採用したものである。数年かけて図譜が完成し、数帖に装丁して
私に題辞を求めてきた。一度展観すると、多くの花々が羅列され、燦然と

輝いて目を奪い、まるで花の林に身を置いているかのようである。その枝葉や
花弁、萼の形状、大小、および神韻を伝える設色の
妙技は生きた植物と全く違いがない。まさに造化の手による
技と言えよう。このような名記録は今人々が多く求めている
一助となるであろう。

I believe that in painting, the spiritual essence (wind-spirit) should be primary, with form and color being secondary.
Sometimes one may rely only on form, but nowadays it is difficult to obtain works that combine both aspects.
Is this not difficult to achieve in botanical illustration? Mōri Kei Baien has
depicted several hundred species of flowering plants, and alongside them
recorded their correct names and alternative names to serve as reference for scholarly verification. This follows the
established theories of herbalism. After several years, the illustrated catalog was completed and bound into several volumes,
and he asked me to write an inscription. Upon viewing it once, the numerous flowers are arrayed in brilliant

splendor that dazzles the eye, as if one had entered a flower forest. The branches, leaves,
petals, calyxes, their shapes and sizes, and the marvelous technique of conveying spirit through coloring
are indistinguishable from living plants. This can truly be called the work of
nature's own hand. Such renowned records are what many people today seek as
an aid.
