出生しなかった。妾腹に男子が誕生し、今の数馬がこれである。私の亡父七郎大夫若水の亡母は、白川御城主本多下野守様の御家中関次大夫の娘お源(ケン)傍観(ほうかん)。次大夫の子で同名にて次大夫が物頭まで進み、禄二百石を得たが、残る三人は早世した。七郎大夫は本多家が宇都宮を去る際に御暇を申し受け、江戸筋で色々と奉公を願ったが叶わず、一生浪人にて、後には須賀川へ引き返し七十四歳で病死した。三城目澄江寺に位牌があり、江山若水居士という。母は三春田川庄兵衛宅で病死し、心荷傍観大姉と申した。 中畠上野介殿の御前へ御石塔並びに若水の亡兄源兵衛の石塔も三城目村北面の山中にある。本法寺にはその頃若水の位牌を立て置いた。澄江寺には城主上野介殿の御位牌があるとのことで、諸書もあって澄江寺殿一法善心居士と申した。 さて甘露慈門日饒も三城目住居の時、水戸へ向かい数馬を召し連れ、水戸御屋敷小石川へ召し具された。その節、谷中村瑞輪寺は身延山の末頭で大中院日孝上人が在住しており、これに入学したところ、檀縁の内三春の若殿秋田伊豆守様が瑞輪寺へ御参詣の折、上の御茶湯で山田清喜老人と御同座の時、私が御酌に罷り立ったところ、清喜が申し談じた趣旨は「この忰は御城下橋本庄左衛門の弟だそうです」と申したので、伊豆守様が仰せになるには「手前は部屋住みである。親類の中で松平遠江守殿に申し込むべきだから、清喜にも内談を頼む」と仰せになったので、早速築地御屋敷へ御出で仰せ込み、清喜老人も家老大久保武左衛門に内証で頼み、早速召し出されて奥小姓となり、十両に五人扶持、四度の御仕着、朔日・十五日・二十八日・佳節の料理代共に賜った。 遠江殿は四品で権現神君の御縁があり、御譜代の座上は左が遠江守殿、右が松平和泉守殿で御歴々である。御城下信濃飯山へ供奉し、終年御奉公を相勤めたところ病気になり、暇を取って遠親類である御組の与力衆の隠居細川六郎右衛門の本郷丸山隠居所へ三年厄介になった。

There was no legitimate birth. A son was born to a concubine, who is the current Kazuma. My late father Shichirō Dayū Jakusui's deceased mother was O-Gen (Ken) Bōkan, daughter of Seki Jidayū from the retainers of Lord Honda Shimotsuke-no-kami, lord of Shirakawa Castle. Jidayū's son, bearing the same name, advanced to the rank of bugyō (magistrate) and received a stipend of two hundred koku, but the remaining three died young. When the Honda family left Utsunomiya, Shichirō Dayū requested leave and sought various positions in the Edo area, but was unsuccessful. He remained a rōnin for life, later returning to Sukagawa where he died of illness at seventy-four. His memorial tablet is at Chōkō-ji temple in Sanjōme, bearing the posthumous name Kōzan Jakusui Koji. His mother died of illness at the residence of Tagawa Shōbē in Miharu and was called Shinni Bōkan Daishi. Before Lord Nakahata Kōzuke-no-suke, there are stone monuments, as well as a stone monument for Jakusui's deceased elder brother Genbē, located in the mountains on the north side of Sanjōme village. At Honpō-ji temple, Jakusui's memorial tablet was erected at that time. At Chōkō-ji temple, there is said to be the memorial tablet of the castle lord Kōzuke-no-suke, along with various documents, called Chōkō-ji-dono Ippō Zenshin Koji. Now, when Kanro Jimon Nichijō was also residing in Sanjōme, he went to Mito, taking Kazuma with him to the Mito residence in Koishikawa. At that time, Zuirin-ji temple in Yanaka village was a branch temple of Mount Minobu, where the venerable Daichū-in Nichikō resided, and I entered to study there. Among the temple patrons, when the young lord of Miharu, Akita Izu-no-kami, visited Zuirin-ji temple, during an elegant tea ceremony where Elder Yamada Seiki was in attendance, I served sake. Seiki remarked, "This young man is said to be the younger brother of Hashimoto Shōzaemon from the castle town." Izu-no-kami replied, "I am a younger son living at home. Among my relatives, I should recommend him to Lord Matsudaira Tōtōmi-no-kami, so I will ask Seiki to discuss this privately." Therefore, he immediately went to the Tsukiji residence to make the request, and Elder Seiki also privately asked the chief retainer Ōkubo Buzaemon. I was quickly summoned and became an inner page with ten ryō and rations for five men, four sets of official clothing, and meal allowances for the first, fifteenth, and twenty-eighth days of each month and special occasions. Lord Tōtōmi held the fourth court rank and had connections to the Divine Sovereign (Tokugawa Ieyasu). Among the hereditary daimyo, Lord Tōtōmi-no-kami sat on the left and Lord Matsudaira Izumi-no-kami on the right, both being distinguished lords. I accompanied him to his castle town of Iiyama in Shinano Province and served faithfully year-round. However, I fell ill and took leave, staying for three years as a dependent at the Hongō Maruyama retirement residence of Hosokawa Rokurō Uemon, a retired yoriki from my lord's group and a distant relative.
