被仰付候と也誠に未曽有の事とて伝えし人〻感せさるはなかりし
世に元禄曽我とてもてはやせしもいといみしき説也
乗邨按に此敵打は人〳〵のもてはやす石井明道士或は本文の如く
元禄曽我と表題せるものなれと是は世に流布するとは小異
有て簡易に書たるなれは爰に記し畢懸疑思ふは半蔵源蔵
の兄弟千辛万苦して敵を打其領主板倉侯へ不訴して直に
大坂の御帳面を消に忍ひて登りし板倉侯へ訴へは其功を賞

一 世にいとはしきものは花に風月に雲なるへし花咲ころは山風烈しく
月すむ秋はむら雲たゝよふ習ひこそいと厭はしけれぬるとも花の

て糸竹をしらへあるはふつくえにより添て今や仰きみれは
いつか雲のむら〳〵と立出るいとわりなしまして海辺に真帆を

申し付けられたということである。誠に未曽有の事として伝えた人々は皆感動しないものはなかった。世に元禄曽我として持て囃されたのも、いと見事な話である。
乗邨の注釈によると、この敵討ちは人々が持て囃す石井明道士、或いは本文のように「元禄曽我」と表題を付けたものであるが、これは世に流布するものとは少し違いがあって、簡潔に書いたものなので、ここに記し終える。疑問に思うのは、半蔵源蔵の兄弟が千辛万苦して敵を討ったのに、その領主板倉侯へ届け出ずに直接大坂の御帳面を消しに忍んで上ったことである。板倉侯へ訴えればその功を賞せられ、青山侯へも格別の御取扱いがあったであろう。既に板倉侯は思いもよらず逃がした追手を詮索するのに時刻を費やしたのも、その功を感じられたからであろう。また青山侯にて兄弟に俸禄を賜ったというが、囲いを厳重にし番士を付けられたのは疑わしい。されば事の真実はこの書にも確かではない。
一つ、世に忌まわしいものは花に風、月に雲であろう。花咲く頃は山風が激しく、月澄む秋は叢雲が漂う習いこそ、いと厭わしい。濡れても花の陰に宿ろうというのは、まことにそのような事であろう。月待ちの頃の夕暮れ、端居して糸竹を調べ、あるいは机に寄り添って今や仰ぎ見れば、いつの間にか雲がむらむらと立ち出る。いと困ったことだ。まして海辺に帆を掛け、河辺に棹を差し、また山路を越え野辺を分けて幾里となく行き行きて振り返って待っていたのに、例の雲が棚引き渡る。いといと口惜しい。名に負う今宵の月を、あたら独りでいようかと思う仲間を呼び交わし、庭の蓬、軒の葛の葉を打ち払っていたのに、人より先に村雨の音がするのは、いと憎らしい。やがて盃などを取って興じていたが、風さえ加わってはらはらと宿を打つ音がするので、八月は

It was ordered thus. Truly, as an unprecedented event, none of the people who heard this story were unmoved. That it was celebrated throughout the world as the "Genroku Soga" was indeed a magnificent tale.
According to Jōson's commentary, this vendetta is what people celebrate as told by Ishii Meidōshi, or what is titled "Genroku Soga" as in the main text, but this differs slightly from what is commonly circulated and is written in a simplified manner, so I record it here and conclude. What I find questionable is that the brothers Hanzō and Genzō, after enduring countless hardships to carry out their revenge, did not report to their lord Itakura but instead secretly went up to Osaka to erase their names from the official records. Had they reported to Lord Itakura, their achievement would have been rewarded and Lord Aoyama would have given them special treatment. That Lord Itakura spent time investigating the pursuers who had unexpectedly escaped was probably because he appreciated their achievement. Also, while it is said that Lord Aoyama granted stipends to the brothers, it is doubtful that he had their residences strictly enclosed and guards assigned to them. Therefore, the truth of these events is not certain even in this document.
One thing that is truly detestable in this world must be wind against flowers and clouds over the moon. When flowers bloom, mountain winds are fierce; when the moon is clear in autumn, clusters of clouds habitually drift by - how truly vexing this is. That one would seek shelter in the shade of flowers even when wet is indeed natural. On an evening waiting for the moon to rise, sitting on the veranda tuning string and wind instruments, or leaning against a desk and looking up, before one knows it, clouds appear in clusters. How very troublesome! Moreover, having traveled countless miles setting sail by the seaside, poling along riverbanks, crossing mountain paths and dividing through fields, then turning back to wait, only to have the usual clouds spread across the sky - how extremely frustrating! Thinking whether to spend this renowned moonlit night alone, calling out to companions, sweeping away the mugwort in the garden and arrowroot leaves from the eaves, yet before anyone else, the sound of a sudden shower - how truly hateful! Soon taking up sake cups and making merry, but when even wind joins in and the sound of pattering against the dwelling begins, in the eighth month...
