【右丁上段：伊勢物語の作者について】
伊勢物語の作者については、古来よりさまざまな説があるといえども、結局のところ、在原業平みずからが自分自身のことを書き記された草紙（冊子）である。その上に、伊勢という女房がさまざまなことを書き添えて物語として仕立て、宇多院の后宮・七条の后（温子）へ献上した草紙である。よって「伊勢物語」と呼ばれる。
**業平の伝記**
業平は平城天皇の御孫・阿保親王の五男である。母は伊登内親王といい、桓武天皇の御息女である。

業平の誕生は、淳和天皇の天長二年八月七日に生まれ、元慶四年五月二十八日に、五十六歳にてお亡くなりになった。
**伊勢の御（伊勢）の伝記**
伊勢は右大臣内麿の末孫、前大和守・従五位上・藤原継蔭の娘である。七条の后に仕える女房であった。宇多院の寵愛を得て、行明親王を産んだ。よって「伊勢御息所」とも「伊勢の女御」ともいう。

**[Right page, upper section: On the authorship of the Tales of Ise]**
Although there have been many differing theories since ancient times regarding the authorship of the Tales of Ise, the conclusion is that it is a booklet written by Ariwara no Narihira himself about his own life. Furthermore, a court lady named Ise added various accounts to this and fashioned it into a tale, which was then presented to the Empress Consort of the Uda Retired Emperor — the Empress of Shichijō, Onshi. It is for this reason that the work is called "Ise Monogatari" (Tales of Ise).
**Biography of Narihira**
Narihira was the fifth son of Prince Abo, a grandson of Emperor Heizei. His mother was Imperial Princess Ito, a daughter of Emperor Kanmu.

Narihira was born on the seventh day of the eighth month of the second year of Tenchō, during the reign of Emperor Junna, and passed away on the twenty-eighth day of the fifth month of the fourth year of Gangyō, at the age of fifty-six.
**Biography of Ise (the lady)**
Ise was a descendant of the Right Minister Uchimaro, and the daughter of the former Governor of Yamato Province, Fujiwara no Tsugukage, of the Senior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade. She served as a court lady to the Empress of Shichijō. Having received the affections of the Retired Emperor Uda, she gave birth to Prince Yukiakira. For this reason she is referred to both as "Ise no Miyasudokoro" and "Ise no Nyōgo."

Long ago, a man, having just celebrated his coming-of-age ceremony, went to the old capital of Nara, to the village of Kasuga, to visit someone he knew there, going out on a hunt.
