なし。いかなる事ぞくれうけんすれば。処（ところ）に久しき
ふるむじなの。ばけごうを経（へ）たるにくぞ有ける。誠
に希有（けう）之（の）しだい也。終（ついに）一 首（しゆ）の辞世（じせい）を作りて云
生れぬる其あかつぎに死ぬれは
けふのゆふべは秋風ぞふく
とかやうにつらね。臨終（りんじう）をとげ給ふ。奇（き）なるかな空寂（くうじやく）
の玄妙（げんみやう）を会得（ゑとく）して。邪摩（じやま）のしやうげをはらひ
其身は死門（しもん）に入ながら活（くはつ）人のねふりをさまされ
けるは。世人の珍事（ちんじ）とする所なり。其後一休を導師（どうし）
と頼み奉り。御引導をこひければ一休も此新右の
には。一かわりかはりて引導すべしと。たくみすま
しておはせしにはや新右衛がしがいをこしにのせ
て来りければ。一休立出給ひて。彼新右衛が乗（のり）た
る龕（がん）をたゝき給へは。死したるものがたからかなる声
を出し。一首の哥をは一休にかける社はふしぎな
れ新右衛門もたゞ人にはあらじと。今の世までも人
のいひつたへ侍るなり。その哥にいわく
ひとり来てひとりかへるも我なるを
道をしへんといふぞおかしき
とたからかにとなへければ。其ことばのおはらざるに。返
哥をし給ふ社有がたけれ
ひとり来てひとりかへるも迷ひなり
現代語訳
話である。どのような事であろうかと詳しく調べてみると、そこに長年住んでいた古い狸が化けて法要を営んでいたのであった。まことに珍しい出来事である。ついに一首の辞世の歌を作って詠んだ。
「生まれ出たその暁に死ぬならば
今日の夕べは秋風が吹く」
このように詠んで、臨終を遂げられた。不思議なことよ、空寂の玄妙な境地を会得して、邪魔な障害を払い、その身は死門に入りながらも生きている人の眠りを覚まされたのは、世の人々が珍事とするところである。その後、一休を導師として頼み奉り、御引導をお願いしたところ、一休もこの新右衛門には一風変わった引導をしようと、工夫を凝らしていらっしゃった。
やがて新右衛門の遺骸を輿に載せて運んで来たので、一休が立ち出られて、かの新右衛門が乗っている棺を叩かれると、死んだはずの者が朗らかな声を出し、一首の歌を一休にかけた。これは不思議なことで、新右衛門もただの人ではあるまいと、今の世まで人々が語り伝えている。その歌は次のように言う。
「一人来て一人帰るのも我なるを
道を教えんというのはおかしい」
と朗らかに唱えたところ、その言葉が終わらないうちに、返歌をなされるとは有り難いことである。
「一人来て一人帰るのも迷いなり」
英語訳
This is the story. When they investigated thoroughly to understand what had happened, they discovered that an old badger that had lived there for many years had transformed itself and was conducting the Buddhist ceremony. This was truly a rare occurrence. Finally, he composed a death poem and recited:
"If one dies at the dawn of being born,
This evening the autumn wind blows"
Reciting thus, he passed away. How wondrous! Having attained the profound mystery of emptiness and quietude, dispelling obstructive hindrances, though his body entered the gate of death, he awakened the sleep of the living—this is what the people of the world consider a marvel. Afterward, they requested Ikkyu to serve as the guiding priest and asked for his guidance in the funeral service. Ikkyu too thought he should provide an unusual kind of guidance for this Shinemon, and was devising something special.
Soon they came carrying Shinemon's corpse on a palanquin. When Ikkyu stepped forward and struck the coffin in which Shinemon was lying, the supposedly dead man spoke in a clear voice and addressed a poem to Ikkyu. This was indeed mysterious, and people have said that Shinemon could not have been an ordinary person—this story is passed down even to this day. The poem went:
"Coming alone and returning alone is also myself—
How amusing to speak of teaching the Way!"
When he chanted this clearly, before those words had even finished, Ikkyu graciously composed a reply poem:
"Coming alone and returning alone is also delusion"
