**[Right folio]** If the pustules are scratched open, one must understand that death will surely follow. Do not let your guard down and bring about regret. One note: In treating smallpox, one must think three days ahead and make preparations early, or it will be too late. Yet laypeople remain calm while no changes have yet appeared, and only when complications arise around the time of suppuration (*hon'umi*) do they suddenly panic and scramble to find a physician. It is for this reason that even a skilled physician will find it difficult to effect a cure. As the ancient saying goes, "A superior physician treats illness before it manifests (*mibyō*)." The true degree of a condition—whether it is mild or severe— **[Left folio]** is not something visible to the eyes of a layperson. Nevertheless, even in what appears to be a mild case of smallpox, there is nothing better than taking careful and attentive measures. **Things to Avoid** (*Sakeimu*) - A person with body odor (underarm odor) - Sexual intercourse (*bōji*) between the parents - The smell of a corpse - Cleaning the privy (toilet) - The smell of raw or putrid things - The smell of someone drunk on sake - The smell of pus from various sores and lesions - The smell of blowing out a lamp or candle - Mosquito-repellent incense - The smell of burning hair
