此心はわだの原とうち出しところ
あはれふかし大かたの人だにも舟路
のたびは心ぼそくかなしかるべきに
いはんやるにんとなりてしらぬなみぢ
にこぎはなるゝ心ねことたへがたきさま
なりわだのはらとは海原の事にて
やそしまはしまのおほき事をいへり
船にかりよそへて人にはつげよといへる

百人一首絵抄 十一
【本文】
この心は「和田の原へと漕ぎ出していく」ところが
あわれ深い。普通の人でさえも船旅は
心細く悲しいものであるのに、
まして流人となって見知らぬ波路を
漕ぎ離れる心の内は言い表しがたい様子である。
和田の原とは海原のことで、
八十島は島の多いことを表している。
船を雁に例えて人には告げよと言っている
心情は、その感慨が特に深い。

Hyakunin Isshu Picture Commentary Eleven
【Main Text】
The feeling of "rowing out to Wada Bay" is
deeply moving. Even ordinary people find sea voyages
lonely and sad,
let alone when one becomes an exile departing on
unfamiliar wave-paths—such inner feelings are beyond description.
"Wada no hara" refers to the ocean plain,
and "eighty islands" expresses the abundance of islands.
The sentiment of likening the boat to wild geese and asking
them to tell people back home
shows particularly deep emotion.
