現代語訳
右の四十二国人物画図は、当時（その頃）蛮人・紅毛人等が交易往来していた諸国の人物を、彼の国の画工が図に描いたものを写して、長崎の画師が図画にしたことから世に広まることとなった。この人物の他にも、なお奇異な国が多いと言われるが、蛮人・紅毛人の往来がないために、未だその伝承が分明でない者については除いた。その始めは四十国としたが、後の人が増加して四十二とした。故に四十二を以ってこれを名付けるのである。図考は長崎の古老の談説を以って撰述した。

The illustrated figures of these forty-two countries are based on people from various nations with whom the barbarians and red-haired foreigners conducted trade and traveled during that time. These were copied from drawings made by artists of those foreign countries and then illustrated by painters in Nagasaki, which is how they came to spread throughout the world. Besides these figures, it is said there are many other strange countries, but since there is no contact with barbarians or red-haired foreigners from those places, and their traditions are not yet clearly transmitted, such countries have been excluded. Originally there were forty countries, but later people increased the number to forty-two. Therefore, it is named after these forty-two countries. The illustrated commentary was compiled based on the oral accounts of elders in Nagasaki.
