此心は花のさきたらば はなに身を
なして人にもたづねらるべしと思ひ
しに わが身世にすめばことしげく
とやか〱と打まぎれてすぐしける
内に 春の長雨にはつ花の色
も見るまにうつりにけりなと打
なげきたる こゝろなり ながめとは
長雨と眺とをかねたる

【巻物本文 解説】
この歌の心は、花が咲いたならば、花の身になって人にも訪ね求められるだろうと思っていたのに、我が身がこの世に住んでいると、雑事が多くて、あれこれと紛れて過ごしているうちに、春の長雨で初花の色も見ているまに移ろってしまったなあと嘆いている、そのような心である。「ながめ」とは長雨と物思いに沈んで眺めることを掛けた言葉である。

The heart of this poem is as follows: I thought that when the flowers bloomed, I would become one with the flowers and be sought after by people, but while living in this world, I am busy with various affairs, and as I pass time distracted by this and that, the color of the first flowers of spring has faded even as I watched them in the long spring rains - such is the lamenting heart expressed here. "Nagame" is a word that combines both "long rain" and "gazing lost in thought."
