【本文】
此心はみちのくのしのぶもじすりといふ
二句はみだるといはんとての序也たれ
ゆへにかみだれそめたるぞたゞわが心は
きみゆゑにこそみだれたるなりといふ
心なりしのぶもじすりとはおうしう
しのぶのこほりのしのぶぐさを布に
すりつけてもやうにするをいふなり
またこれをすい【「り」とあるところ】衣【「摺り衣」＝染め草の汁ですりつけて種々の模様を染め出した衣。】ともいふなり

【本文】
この歌の心は、陸奥の忍摺（しのぶもじすり）という言葉を使って「乱れ」と言おうとするための序詞である。誰のせいで髪が乱れ始めたのかといえば、ただ私の心は、あなたのために乱れているのだという意味である。忍摺とは、奥州忍の郡の忍草を布に摺りつけて模様にすることを言う。またこれを摺り衣とも言う。

【Main text】
The meaning of this poem uses the term "Michinoku no shinobu-mojizuri" (the patterned cloth of Shinobu in Michinoku) as a makurakotoba (pillow word) to lead into the word "midare" (disorder/dishevelment). The question "who is responsible for my hair becoming disheveled?" is answered: it is only because my heart is disordered due to you. Shinobu-mojizuri refers to the practice of rubbing shinobu grass from Shinobu County in Ōshū onto cloth to create patterns. This is also called "suri-koromo" (rubbed garment).
