現代語訳
【一段目】
鹿島「これは災々、これは困った。今度の大地震で家や蔵が焼けて、石が返って大串小串のナマズの皮焼きだ。しかし、この時節の道理で、見金売りが要、石ひょうたんひょうたん、ひょうばんひょうばんと聞こえるかも知れない。
火事「もしもし、そこへ行くのは雷公とお爺さんではないか。」
爺「そういうのは火事公か、どこへ行くのだ。」
火事「鹿島様がナマズを焼く火に使われないうちに消えるつもりさ。」
爺「それが良い。火事よ、地震は野暮の上なしだ。」
火事「して、お前方はどんな世界かね。」
雷「立退きが流行るというから、隠居とこっそり新装開店だ。」
火事「それは楽しみだが、しかし雷公は儲けまいぜ。」
雷「なぜなぜ。」
火事「手前は近所のごろつきだから。」
芸者「もし三味線屋さん、このごろはお忙しいかえ。」
三味線屋「どうしてどうして、地震この方、三筋はおろか一筋のお足も取れず、まことに困った四つ痔さ。実にどうしようかと思う。お前なんぞはおでん燗酒で温まったという噂でございますぜ。」
芸者「それも本の、あの当座さ。長くすると味噌をつけますよ。」
船頭「本当に私達が商売もやっぱり似たりよったりで、わずか二朱が三丁の丁髷刈りさえできやせぬ。」
呉服屋「いずこの裏地も同じこと。かな金も儲かる話はなく、暇な上田に難儀に、青目愚痴ばかりを遊郭島さ。」
料理屋「反物よりは口の早い料理でさえも食い手はなく、会席商売にはなりやせぬ。」
【雷の右腕の下】
雷「俺もこの度の地震では嫌、もう松さを（真っ青）になって駆け出した。」
【二段目】
貸本屋「いや、私なども本は焼き、払いは取れず、この暮れは中本の泣き本さ。早く一夜明けて笑い本の世界としたい。この苦労を知らぬのは、お囲いさん、お前だね。」
囲い者「何さ、旦那の家が丸焼けゆえ、私の方までお鉢が回らず、食べる物さえ不自由がちだわね。」
話家「その口稼ぎに私らも組合の衆の恐い色を使い、仕事に出たが、口ほどに方々の旦那に利かぬゆえ、扇なめに会いました。これも後の話の種さ。」
踊りの師匠「唐人話でお屋敷のお狂言は上がったり、難儀なところへこの度の藤間、正も様も中村座で怪我をせぬのが幸せさ。」
【三段目】
小道具屋「実に今度の地震では大小となく道具を震い、みじん七々子にして、道具屋は商いは暇、その上に切迫した傘作の入用より縁頭を買っております。」
講釈師「地震と火事のかけ持ちから、流浪の上の兵糧攻め、すでに落城するところ、ようやく夜興行で取り付きました。」
動物屋「皆さんよりは取り分けて飼い手のない動物、獣類、いっそ等々屋とろめんか、人間の毛なら売れるであろう。」
【左の煙の下】
三味線屋「胸は二上がりは古物くと、今度は金玉がそう上がりだ。」
【四段目】
俳諧師「商人衆、又暇はなく、困らぬは俳諧、百韻の天理屋、取らねば米の、地に手には、この節は一句で。」
合力「もし、そう商、でこさる奴がれな、お出入りのお屋敷、皆潰れど、こうという召し使いもな、本の命を繋ぐのみでござ。」
茶人「舟一茶などは能忠、だんだん薄茶、そこが見えればこ、茶は仕舞を せずはなりますまい。」
勘化「誰か、問い、な、で、二日このかた一文のお足ももらわぬ大き損、実に地震は御恩の毛。」
【勘化の上】
芸者「ナマズの尻振りは後が恐いよ。」
紙屑拾い「焼け場に紙屑のないのが分かったが、地震の行ったのは夜だから、後に紙屑がありそうなもの。」
