**(Postface to the *Tenshō Wasetsu*, continued)** …benevolent and magnanimous in disposition, of wide learning and retentive memory, desiring little yet capable in many things — there was no wondrous art or subtle technique of any kind in which he was not thoroughly versed, and all of these, it is said, he received from the posthumous teachings of Kūkei, Master Hiraga. He is especially conversant in astronomy and geography, and his disciples number some forty thousand and more. I had long lamented the state of the ancients' learning of celestial phenomena — that as the years and months passed it had fallen into neglect, and that generation after generation people were unable to distinguish the stellar configurations, instead establishing a teaching based on *kenka* (a simplified framework method) and taking that as their instruction.
