麺となして食用にするものである。6月に種を蒔き、9月に収穫する。茎の
高さは2尺ほど。根の上4、5寸は深紅色。葉は三角形で互生する。秋に梢
に枝を分かち、小さな白い花を密集して咲かせる。後に実を結ぶ。三稜がある。一種でさんど
そばというのは、1年に3度熟する。実は大きく稜が高く、ハマビシの実に似て
刺がない。

This is made into noodles for food consumption. Seeds are sown in the 6th month and harvested in the 9th month. The stem
grows to about 2 shaku in height. The 4-5 sun above the root is deep red in color. The leaves are triangular and alternately arranged. In autumn, branches divide at the tips
and small white flowers cluster densely. Later it bears fruit with three ridges. One variety called sando-
soba ripens three times in one year. The fruit is large with high ridges, resembling caltrop seeds
but without thorns.
