were assigned, and they were also granted one each of haori jacket, padded winter clothing, lined clothing, unlined clothing, undergarments, and summer kimono, and also received tobacco and paper from the officials. From October 1st of the following year, daily examinations were conducted before the magistrate in the white sand court, they performed the fumie (picture-stepping ritual), and were ordered into detention at the揚屋 (temporary prison). Then, on June 23rd of this year of the Rat, official documents were read aloud in the white sand court, and they were granted one silver piece, one bean-shaped gold piece, one padded garment, hand towel, underwear, and one umbrella. Following proper protocol, the gold dust that Manjiro had brought, along with one surveying instrument, twelve books in horizontal script, one flintlock rifle, two pocket guns, and ammunition were confiscated. The gold dust was ordered to be exchanged for official currency. Furthermore, they were ordered to remain quietly and were prohibited from traveling freely to other countries. They were handed over to domain officials, and the clothing and hats they had worn in that foreign land were allowed to be kept. They departed dressed in the style of their home country, passed through Isahaya and Shimonoseki, and arrived at Tosa castle town on July 11th. Second Account After Denzō and others who had drifted to Honolulu returned to Japan, when Manjiro finished his account of seafaring in America and was asked about the customs and climate of that land, his answer was as follows: First, the native people of the island kingdom are not different from those of Asia. There are approximately seven islands: one is Honolulu, one is Nanai, one is Molokai, one is Maui, one is Kauai, and one is called Morohe. The capital is in Honolulu, at a place called Hanarono.
