不肖の身
東照宮の神統を承しよりこのかた
天下の政事常に
神徳に嗣ん事を以て心とす然るに
在世の日短くして其志の遂さる事
今に及ていふへき所をしらす古より主幼く
国危き代々を見るに其世の人権を
争ひ党をたて其心相和らかすして
相疑ふによらさるはなし胡越の人も
舟を同しくして水を渡るに其心を
一つにし其力を共にする時は風波の
難をもわたるへし況や今の世の人
当家創業の後治平百年の間に
相生れ相長となる事誰かは
東照宮の神恩によらさるものゝあるへき
人々其 神恩に報ひ奉り世のため人の
ためを存せは古の主幼く国危き代々の
事共を以て深き戒とすへしもし其志
なからんにおゐては当家の厄難といふのみ
にはあらす尤是天下人民の不幸たる
へし凡天下の貴賤大小よろしく相心得
へき事に 思召者也

現代語訳
不肖の身でありながら、東照宮の神統を受け継いでこのかた、天下の政治において常に神徳に従うことを心がけてきた。しかし在世の日が短く、その志を遂げることができず、今に至って何と申し上げてよいかわからない。
古来より主君が幼く国が危うい時代を見ると、その世の人々が権力を争い、党派を立て、心を和らげることなく互いに疑い合わないことはない。胡越の人々でさえ、同じ舟に乗って水を渡る時には、心を一つにし力を合わせれば風波の難も乗り越えることができる。ましてや今の世の人々は、当家創業の後、治平百年の間に生まれ育ったのであり、誰が東照宮の神恩によらない者があろうか。
人々がその神恩に報い奉り、世のため人のためを思うなら、古の主君が幼く国が危うかった時代の出来事を深い戒めとすべきである。もしその志がないならば、当家の厄難というだけでなく、最も天下人民の不幸となるであろう。およそ天下の貴賤大小を問わず、よろしく心得るべき事と思し召しである。

英語訳
Though I am an inadequate person, since inheriting the divine lineage of Toshogu, I have always made it my heart's desire to follow divine virtue in governing the realm. However, my days in this world are short, and I have been unable to fulfill this aspiration. Now I do not know what to say about this situation.
Looking at past eras when rulers were young and nations were in peril, in such times people invariably争ed for power, formed factions, and suspected each other without harmonizing their hearts. Even people from distant lands like Hu and Yue, when crossing waters in the same boat, can overcome the perils of wind and waves if they unite their hearts and combine their strength. How much more so for the people of today's world, who were born and raised during the hundred years of peace following our house's founding - who among them does not owe their existence to the divine grace of Toshogu?
If people repay that divine grace and think of the welfare of the world and its people, they should take the events of ancient times when rulers were young and nations imperiled as a profound warning. Should they lack such resolve, it would not merely bring calamity upon our house, but would most certainly bring misfortune upon all the people of the realm. It is my earnest wish that all people throughout the land, regardless of high or low station, great or small, should understand this well.
