火夜苦（ひよく）の門並（かどなみ）
〽宵（よい）の寐（ね）ばなに打（うち）ゆする地震（なまづ）の
もん火（ひ）のいきおひはみな子（こ）に
迷（まよ）ふ行所（ゆきところ）どこにといへるなき
さたは北国一（ほつこくいち）の遊女町（ゆふじよまち）よるのなき
こゑかゝり船（ふね）ねごみおこさぬ客（きやく）
もなし中（なか）に高家（たかや）の天（てん）へんは
どうもぐづ〳〵ひどいめの風（かぜ）
のかたきのうきよとてあげ
くのはてのゆりかへしかめの
かわりに手ばまりのつみがかうしですい

〽夜の寝入りばなに激しく揺する地震の
火の勢いはすべて子供に
迷う行き先はどこにと言えるような
決まりごとは北国一の遊女町、夜の泣き
声、係留船も寝込みを起こさない客
もいない。中でも高級遊郭の天変は
どうもぐずぐずとひどい目に遭う風
の敵のような浮世といって、上げ
句の果ての揺り返し、亀の
代わりに手まりの罪が格子ですい
風呂の〽桶伏せになる身はつらいものよ
地震兵衛、おろおろと涙ぐんで

〽At bedtime in the evening, the violently shaking earthquake,
The force of the fire affects all the children,
Wandering with nowhere to go, what can be said—
Such circumstances in the greatest pleasure quarter of the northern provinces, the night crying
voices, even the moored boats, no customers
disturb their sleep. Among them, the calamity at the high-class brothels
is somehow sluggishly causing terrible suffering, like wind
enemies of this floating world, and so the rising
verse ends with aftershocks, instead of a turtle,
the sin of hand-balls through the lattice, the public
bath's 〽hiding under a tub is a miserable fate,
Jishinbei (Earthquake Jishinbei) sheds tears in distress
