これはオランダの植物図鑑「印忙」の図である。日本と中国のどちらでも実際にこの植物を目にしたことがない植物である。形状は縮砂に似ているが、葉がやや小さく、実もまた小さい。
私が考えるには、縮砂と益智はともに「印忙」に掲載されているところの図説によれば高木である。また西洋の後世の諸書を考察すると草本植物であるので、中国人の説明するところと一致する。しかしその写し取った
真の図を得られないので、とりあえず古い図を掲載する。

Alpinia oxyphylla (yakuchishi) Cardamomum minus (Dutch)
This is an illustration from the Dutch botanical work "Imban." It is a plant that has not been actually observed in either Japan or China. Its form resembles shukusha (Amomum), but the leaves are somewhat smaller, and the fruits are also smaller.
In my consideration, both shukusha and yakuchi, according to the illustrations and descriptions contained in "Imban," are tall trees. Moreover, when examining various later Western books, they are herbaceous plants, which matches what the Chinese scholars describe. However, since we cannot obtain the authentic
illustrations copied from the true figures, I temporarily include the old illustrations.
