Yakaku Shosatsu Shō (Night Heron's Epistolary Selections)
The way of the brush and inkstone (calligraphy) encompasses many varieties in both Japanese and Chinese traditions. These include ancient scripts and recent scripts, the Chinese characters in formal (shin), semi-cursive (gyō), and cursive (sō) styles, kana, characters with the "hen" radical, those with the "tama" radical, and so forth. Among these, from the brush techniques (hissei) of mitsu-ro, kenshin, ichimokusho, ka, gyorinkaeshi, and kasasagi (magpie) and below — though all belong to distinguished families and masters — setting aside minor branches, I have here compiled and annotated the essential points. The literary elegance is insufficient, and the composition is not well-ordered. Those who read this in the future may well mock it. Nevertheless, since transmitting the family tradition to the next generation is a matter of great importance, I have organized it into sections and compiled this collection in a manner easily understood by those who come after, naming it the "Yakaku Shosatsu Shō" (Night Heron's Epistolary Selections).
