[Right folio] Thereupon, one reads this (and, having understood its content,) has it written out. One: Plaques (gaku) are, in the art of calligraphy, the greatest matter of one's lifetime. However, the plaques within the imperial palace (dairi) are rendered in an archaic script (kobun), copied northward (i.e., traced or transferred in a northward orientation). Among those writings, there are many places where the renderings differ. The west, south, and "third" (san-yo?) are among them. Since these are matters into which various stroke details and compositional techniques enter, one does not casually provide annotations about them (I will not record them here). One: Regarding the matter of the御表 (omote, the formal written notice or presentation). This is a matter entrusted to one's own keeping, rather than being left to the household officials (kegan) of the regents, kampaku, ministers, and those below them. A person who already possesses talent writes it himself. From the lowest seat among the court nobles (kugyō), or from the upper area of the Kurōdo-dokoro (Chamberlain's Office), up to the Higashi-Sanjō-dono — it seems one writes as far as the east and west of the corridors of the two buildings. As for the formal [Left folio] attire, one attends dressed correctly in formal court costume (ikan). The scholarly calligraphers' (hakase) dress varied between full ceremonial court dress (sokutai) and the ikan, depending on the occasion. It is said that the precedent set by Tōfū and Yukinari was that both wore ikan. It is also said that although Tōfū's own talent did not reach the level of Yukinari, he was recognized as such due to the considerations of the time. One: Regarding writing on the doors of the御願所 (go-gansho, a hall of votive prayer): one is given the main text (honmon) and, after consulting it, there is a prescribed procedure for first writing a draft (shidai). The color paper (shikishi) form for the upper (section) is written slightly larger, and the lower (section) is written slightly smaller. One: Regarding the folding screens (shōji) used in annual ceremonies: the characters representing the twelve months must each be written in twelve different styles. Although I thought to change the character "夫" (fu/soれ) with each line, it seems that is not necessarily the case. Also, no matter what one does, ink simply will not adhere to raw silk (suzushi).
