現代語訳
町役人共から問い糾された所、組合の中の与兵衛という者が申し聞かせるには、右の和吉は伴助の甥ではあるが、心構えが気に入らず、家督相続をさせることは難しいものであると、平日から申していた。既に去る春には追い返すべきだと申していたとのことである。養子にすることについてはともかくとして、先ずはこれまでの通り世話をするように取り計らう者がおり、その分については差し置いておいた段は、伴助存命の節には毎度話もあったとのことである。組頭の幸左衛門も同様に申している旨を町役人共が申し聞かせた。その方（孫蔵）のことも、伴助の跡目さえ立てば申し分ないとのことを申し聞かせる上は、後家の考えの通りに取り計らい、養子については相応しい者を探して伴助の跡式を立てるべきである旨を申し渡しておく。その旨を承知すべきものである。

When inquired by the town officials, a person named Yohei from within the group stated that although the aforementioned Wakichi is Bansuke's nephew, his attitude is unsatisfactory and it would be difficult to allow him to inherit the family headship. He had been saying this regularly, and already last spring he had said that Wakichi should be sent back. Regarding making him an adopted son, that matter aside, first there should be someone to arrange care as before, and that matter was left as is - there were frequent discussions about this when Bansuke was alive. The group leader Kozaemon also stated the same, as reported by the town officials. Regarding you (Magozo), they reported that as long as Bansuke's succession is established, there would be no complaints. Based on this, arrangements should be made according to the widow's wishes, and a suitable person should be found as an adoptee to establish Bansuke's succession. This directive should be understood.
